Welcome To Madras University
Madras University was establishment in the year 1857. The university was created in the model of London university. The university of madras is almost the mother of all old universities of south part of India. The administration of Madras university has been limited to three districts in the recent years.
The foundation of university comes to terms of four faculties are arts, law, medicine and engineering. As a result of the Madras university act, the law, medicine and engineering faculties earlier associated with universities. Since the university shifted to Dr. Ambedkar Law college for law, Dr. MGR Medical college for medicine and finally Anna University for engineering.
The university of madras introduced autonomous college in the year of 1978 -79. Actually, it was the first to introduce to autonomous college. Now, there are 131 affiliated institutions out of them 23 have become autonomous.
The UGC has given the status “University with Potential for Excellence” in the year 2000. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited it as “Five Star” in the same year. This university have been strength to strength by widening its teaching and research activities.
The University of Madras has developed an excellent Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in the year 1981. It help the students to achieve their educational, career and personal goals. It has completed more than 25 years of service in the field of distance education.
Now IDE is offering 16 Undergraduate courses, 22 Postgraduate courses and 19 Diploma courses and 16 Certificate courses. Admissions are made throughout the year for all these 73 programmes in two streams - academic year and calendar year.
